In the first reading, John writes to his community encouraging them to refrain from loving the world or the things of the world, and to do the will of God. In the Gospel, the prophetess Anna, who has spent her life in fasting and prayers in the Temple, gives thanks to God for the Child Jesus.
Christ, the eternal one, is worthy of our lives, whereas the things of this world will pass away.
As we continue our Christmas celebration, we consider the wisdom of following the child Jesus versus being enticed by the allurements of the world. As Anna’s example demonstrates, Jesus is worth waiting for and giving up the things of this world – things that will pass away in the end.

I am writing to you, children,
because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake.

There was a prophetess, Anna,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.

and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.
She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
And coming forward at that very time,
she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions
of the law of the Lord,
they returned to Galilee,
to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;
and the favor of God was upon him.

Optional memorial Saint Sylvester I, pope
In the first reading, Saint John writes that through the holy One, we have been given knowledge of the truth. Likewise in the Gospel, Saint John explains the eternal divinity of Jesus Christ and the promises God delivers to us through him.
In the person of Jesus Christ, God not only saves us, but also gives us the opportunity to be one of his children.
As we commemorate the promise of salvation that God fulfilled through Jesus Christ, we give thanks for the gift of redemption, and the opportunity to be called a child of God.

In the beginning was the Word,

A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light,

He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision
but of God.

From his fullness we have all received,
grace in place of grace,
because while the law was given through Moses,
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.

has revealed him.

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.
God tells Moses to speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them God promises is blessing and peace to his people. Saint Paul writes to the Galatians about the mystery of the Incarnation – through it God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts to make us his adopted children. In the Gospel, the shepherds visit Mary, Joseph and the Baby, and then glorify and praise God. Jesus is given his name.
We celebrate the place of Mary God’s plan of salvation. In her “yes” she accepts the invitation to bring the world its Savior.
With the birth of Jesus, God enters into human history in a new and dynamic way. Mary’s role as mother is both essential and another example of how God has chosen and blessed the people who belong to him. With this Christ-filled blessing comes God’s peace and our adoption and sons and daughters of God.

Obligation memorial Saints Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, bishop and doctor of the Church
In the first reading, john writes to his community that the Antichrist is one who denies Jesus is the Christ. In the Gospel from John, Jewish leaders quiz John the Baptist about his identity. He admitted he was not the Christ, not Elijah, nor the prophet, but the voice of one crying out in the desert, “Make straight the way of the Lord”
There is one Christ, and we follow him.
Over time, God revealed himself to our ancestors in myriad ways, with his final and more perfect revelation coming in the form of his son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the one who unites us to the Father, and who with the Father, gave us the Spirit to assist us in knowing the truth about God. What is true is of God, and what is false is not. We follow Jesus because he is the Truth.

Who is the liar?
Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.

This is the testimony of John.

And he said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
He answered, “No.”
So they said to him,
“Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?
What do you have to say for yourself?”
He said:
“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’
as Isaiah the prophet said.”
Some Pharisees were also sent.
They asked him,
“Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?”
John answered them,
“I baptize with water;
but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.

Optional memorial The Most Holy name of Jesus
John’s letter tells us we are children of God and when we act in righteousness. We remain in him, and will one day see him as he is. In the Gospel, John the Baptist sees Jesus and proclaims that he is the Lamb of God, the Son of God.
See what love the Father has bestowed in us.
Jesus has many names. Today, we hear John the Baptist calls him the Lamb of God and the Son of God. Most of us have names we are called other than our given names – some we may like, some we may not. What a privilege, that among our names, we may be called the children of God.

In the first reading, John writes that the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil. Children of God are righteous, and the children of the devil commit sin. In the Gospel, Jesus invites Andrew and his companion to come and see. Andrew then brings his brother, Simon, who is recognized by Jesus and given the new name, Peter.
We are children of God.
Through the grace of God and his Son, Jesus Christ, we are made adopted children of God. Christ is sinless and righteous; he is the Lamb of God who took away our sins. In him and through him we have the grace to grow in holiness and the avoidance of sin, and increase our love for one another. For this is how children of God are made plan to others.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him,
“We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ.
Then he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said,
“You are Simon the son of John;
you will be called Cephas,” which is translated Peter.

The Epiphany of the Lord.
Isaiah prophesies that a light has come to Jerusalem, while darkness covers the earth. All will come to the city bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord. Paul tells the Ephesians that Gentiles are coheirs of God, along with the people of Israel. In the Gospel, Magi arrives Jerusalem from the East in search of the new born king of the Jews. Herod is troubled by this, and the Magi visit Mary and her child and offer gifts.
Jesus is the Savior born for all.
Today, we celebrate the revelation of Jesus’ coming to all as our Savior. That news is not received gratefully and joyfully by all – as we see by Herod’s reaction, and the action of many today who do not believe. As Christians who have the grace of redemption through the Paschal mystery of Christ, may our lives be a joyful and generous witness to others – that they, too, may come to share in it. May they, too, have an Epiphany.

They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures
and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.
