Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles, solemnity
In the first reading, Herod has James killed, and Peter imprisioned. But an angel of the Lord frees Peter. In his Letter to Timothy, Paul writes: The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race. In the Gospel, Jesus says to Simon, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.
We are Christ’s Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
The Church has always faced challenges, from the behavior of those within to persecution by those without. Yet Jesus reassures us that we will prevail. We are founded by Christ and led by the Holy Spirit, and Truth cannot be defeated. A firm foundation of faith and an evangelizing spirit, combined with God’s grace, bring the good news of Jesus and of God’s love for us to the world. Let us pray for our pope, successor to Peter, may the Lord continue to protect and preserve him as he leads our Holy Church. Amen.

Reading 1 Acts 12:1-11
In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the Church to harm them.
He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,
and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews
he proceeded to arrest Peter also.
–It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.–
He had him taken into custody and put in prison
under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
Peter thus was being kept in prison,
but prayer by the Church was fervently being made
to God on his behalf.
On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial,
Peter, secured by double chains,
was sleeping between two soldiers,
while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him
and a light shone in the cell.
He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying,
“Get up quickly.”
The chains fell from his wrists.
The angel said to him, “Put on your belt and your sandals.”
He did so.
Then he said to him, “Put on your cloak and follow me.”
So he followed him out,
not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real;
he thought he was seeing a vision.
They passed the first guard, then the second,
and came to the iron gate leading out to the city,
which opened for them by itself.
They emerged and made their way down an alley,
and suddenly the angel left him.
Then Peter recovered his senses and said,
“Now I know for certain
that the Lord sent his angel
and rescued me from the hand of Herod
and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting.”

Optional memorial The First Maryrs of the holy Roman Church.
The prophet Amost addresses Israel, God’s chosen people, and rebukes them for their unfaithfulness. He has heard God and must share the pophecy: God will punish Israel. In the Gospel, Jesus is on a boat with the disciples. He sleeps as a storm tosses the vessel. His disciples wake him and Jesus calms the storm after asking why they are terrified.
Turn to God and he will save us.
When we face trials, we can either turn to God or away from him. Ancient Israel turned from him, and God judges them accordinggly. The disciples turned to God, begging Jesus for help. We , too, can ask Jesus to save us from any kind of dificulty, as well as from our own sins. We know he will answer. Let us pray for those suffering in the storms of life, may the Lord bring them comfort through his Body, the Church. Amen.

The Lord, through the prophet Amos, commands the Israelites to seek good and not evil. He hates their feasts and their stall-fed peace offerings. In the Gospel, Jesus encounters two people possessed by demons, who correctly identify him as the Son of God. Jesus drives the demons into a herd of swine, which then drowns. The townspeople beg Jesus to leave their district.
Jesus helps us replace evil with good. We must invite Jesus into our hearts to drive out sin wherever it lingers. He respects our free will enough that he will not stay if we do not want him there. However, his very presence is enough to disturb and disrupt evil. By ridding our hearts of darkness, we can be free to do, and seek good. Let us pray for our Church leaders, may the Lord bless them with strength and good health as they continue their ministry. Amen.

The demons pleaded with him,
“If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.”

They came out and entered the swine,
and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea
where they drowned.
The swineherds ran away,
and when they came to the town they reported everything,
including what had happened to the demoniacs.
Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus,
and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.

Amaziah tells the prophet Amos to flee to the land of Judah. In the Gospel, Jesus forgives the sins of a paralyzed young man. When the religious leaders say he is blaspheming, Jesus cures the man of his paralysis as a sign that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.
Turn to Jesus and ask for his help in increasing our faith. To forgive another can be hard. To forgive ourselves can be harder. Not to do so is a way of rejecting Christ’s authority to forgive us, much as the religious leaders did. But when we struggle with this challenge, we can turn to Jesus and ask for his help in increasing our faith. He has already redeemed us from the consequences of sin; let us allow him to help us see that. Let us pray that the peace of Christ may heal divisions and bring an end to violence throughout the world. Amen.

After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
“Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
“This man is blaspheming.”
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
“Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins”–
he then said to the paralytic,
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

Saint Thomas, Apostle – Feast.
Paul writes to the people of Ephesus, instructing them that they are no longer strangers but fellow citizens and members of the household of God. In the Gospel, Thomas comes face to face with the risen Lord and declares, My Lord and my God.
Cast off doubt and embrace the risen Lord. Doubt can give way to fear, but faith gives way to action. Once the Apostle Thomas sets aside his doubt and embraces Jesus after the Resurrection, he is emboldened to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. Likewise, we are emboldened by Christ’s presence in word and sacrament, and can allow faith to overcome fear and donut. Let us pray for those dealing with doubts and anxieties, may God’s gift of peace rest in their hearts. Amen.

Independence Day in United States of America; Saturday in honor of BVM
In the conclusion to the Book of Amos, the prophet speaks of the day of restoration of his people Israel. In the Gospel, Jesus answers the question about the legitimacy of his not fasting by asking, Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?
God is always ready to restore us to abundant life, if we only turn back to him when we go astray. Amos, a prophet known for his denunciation of injustice, writes of a time when God will restore good fortune and freedom to the people of Israel. God wills only what is good for his children. If we turn to God with trust and sorrow for our sins, he will forgive us, and his grace will help us grow in faith. Let us pray for families who struggle with inadequate resources, may God sustain them in their need and provide what they need to flourish. Amen.

Zechariah tells Jerusalem to rejoice, for their king shall come to them… riding… on a colt, proclaiming a message of peace to the nations. Saint Paul instructs the Romans that whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. In the Gospel, Jesus gives praise to the Father for what he has revealed to the little ones.
Jesus’ kingship is one of mercy with humility and compassion, and in a particular way, his understanding of the blessings of children. His dominion is not one of power and control, but of a servant who lifts up the fallen and raises all who are burdened; he is gracious and merciful. Let us pray for blessings and continued graces upon the lives of all of us. Amen.
