In the first reading, a woman speaks of her lover arriving, and calling to her, Arise, my beloved… my beautiful one, and come! In the Gospel, Mary sets out to visit Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth hears her voice, the infant in her womb leaps for joy.
Let us celebrate Christmas with the joyful faith of Mary. In his first encounter with the word incarnate, John the Baptist leaps for joy. Mary facilitates this first meeting, bearing Jesus in her womb. Let us finish Advent eagerly, with anticipation of the arrival; of the infant Jesus. Do we receive him with joy? Let us ask Mary to help us love and rejoice in her Son, Jesus Christ. Let us pray for the Church on earth as we celebrate the coming of our newborn King, may the light and splendor of his presence draw many to salvation.

Mary set out in those days

cried out in a loud voice and said,

In the first reading, Hannah dedicates Samuel to the Lord in thanksgiving of her answered prayers for a child. In the Gospel, Mary greets Elizabeth, her cousin, and gives praise to God: proclaiming the greatness of the Lord and that she will be called blessed for all ages.
God does great things in all of us; let us always remember to give him thanks for his goodness. Hannah and Mary give praise and thanks to God for the good things he has done for them. They have been witness to the power of God, and the mercy he has on those who fear him. Their example of unfailing faith in the face of hardship and fear is one for us to follow. For God does great things in all of us. Let us pray for all those who govern, may the Holy Spirit bless them with an abundance of understanding and prudence.

In those days,
Hannah brought Samuel with her,
along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine,
and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh.
After the boy’s father had sacrificed the young bull,
Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:
“Pardon, my lord!
As you live, my lord,
I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.
Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD.”
She left Samuel there.

In the first reading, the prophet Malachi speaks of the Lord sending a messenger who will prepare the way for him. In the Gospel, Elizabeth gives birth to a son, the mute Zechariah begins to speak again, and people wonder at the work of the Lord.
The Lord prepares a way for us to receive the gift of himself. Today’s readings focus on the preparations necessary to receive the Lord. In Malachi, the Lord says he will send his messenger to turn people’s hearts. This Advent, how have our hearts been turned to the Lord? What final graces can we request to receive him this Christmas? Let us pray for all those for whom this time of year is a burden, may the Lord draw near to them in their sorrow.
Reading 1
Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,

but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?”

Thursday in the Fourth Week of Advent – Mass in the Morning

In the first reading, David desires to build a house for the ark of God. God responds by promising permanent security for Israel and a permanent dynasty for David. In the Gospel, Zechariah rejoices in God’s fidelity to his covenant, and speaks words to his new son of the time when he will go before the Lord to prepare his way.
God’s promises are a source of hope and rejoicing. As Advent comes to a close, the readings reflect the exuberant joy that comes with God’s promises. God answers David’s desire to build the temple with a promise to grant him an everlasting dynasty. He answers Zechariah’s prayers by granting him a son, who will go before the Messiah. We, too, can rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promises to us. Let us pray for all of us, awaiting in hope for the coming of Christ, may abide in his truth forever.

When King David was settled in his palace,
and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
“Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!”
Nathan answered the king,
“Go, do whatever you have in mind,

But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?

Vigil – The nativity of the Lord – Solemnity
The prophet Isaiah proclaims God’s promise of vindication for Israel. In the light of its fulfillment, Israel will shine and rejoice once more. Saint Paul preaches to the early Church at Antioch, telling how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Davidic promises. In the Gospel, Matthew recites the genealogy of Jesus Christ, placing him in direct succession to David and Abraham.
Born in time yet eternally begotten, Christ fulfills the promises once made to Israel and all the world. Christmas, the birth of Christ, heralds the beginning of our salvation. In the darkness of the night, God’s Purest light appears in time, offering us a share in his eternal life through this newborn Child who is Emmanuel: God is with us. Let us pray for the Church, the Body of Christ in the world, and for her prophetic witness to all.

Night – The nativity of the Lord – Solemnity
Isaiah prophesies a time of salvation for Israel, when a great light will come to the people who walked in darkness. A child will be born, and called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero. Saint Paul writes that the grace of God has appeared, saving all. In the Gospel, Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem in order to enroll in the census. It is there that Mary gave birth to her Son, and the angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds to announce that a savior has been born.
Jesus’ birth brings abundant joy and great rejoicing. Tonight, what we have awaited for so long is finally here as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. At the time of his birth 2,000 years ago, the world had been waiting in hope for a Messiah. Jesus, the Son of God, came in the dead of night to redeem us and show us the reason for this hope: God’s love. Let us pray for Church Leaders, may the Lord continue to bless them in their ministry of heralding the birth of Jesus, the Son of God.

Day – The nativity of the Lord – Solemnity
Isaiah prophesies the exiled Israelites’ return to Zion, glorifying the Lord and his strength. The author of Hebrews writes that God’s revelation is complete in the person of his Son. In the Gospel, John writes, In the beginning was the Word, andt the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Father’s only Son became flesh and dwelled among us, and John the Baptist gave witness to him and said this man was the one he said was coming.
God himself chose to dwell among us. God did not create a new being in Jesus Christ. Rather, his only begotten Son, the second person of the Trinity, came to dwell among us. Through him we have the fullness of revelation of who God is, and we are reunited and reconciled to God in his glory. Let us pray for legislators and policy-makers, may the Lord guide their decision-making in order to protect the lives of the unborn.

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,

Feast of Saint Stephen, first martyr

In the first reading, Stephen is stoned to death for working great wonders and signs among the people, such that the people could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus warns his disciples of coming persecution. He instructed his followers to not worry about their defense, saying, for it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Those who follow Jesus have nothing to fear. Jesus, after commissioning the disciples, warns them of coming persecutions. Like Jesus, his followers are subject to criticism and persecution. On today’s feast of Saint Stephen, the first martyr, we recognize the cost of following Jesus is high, and the reward is everything. Yet God, in love, saved his people, and in the end we have nothing to fear. Let us pray for those who are sick, may the Lord grant them the power of redemptive suffering and the fullness of his healing power.

Stephen, filled with grace and power,
was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
Cyrenians, and Alexandrians,
and people from Cilicia and Asia,
came forward and debated with Stephen,
but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
When they heard this, they were infuriated,
and they ground their teeth at him.
But he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven
and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and he said,
“Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
standing at the right hand of God.”
But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears,
and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out
“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

In today’’s first reading, God promises Abram an heir, even though Abram is very old. Before too long Sarah, his wife, bears him a son. In the second reading, the author of Hebrews tells the story of Abraham as an example of true faith in God. In the Gospel, Joseph and Mary take Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. The devout and righteous Simeon beheld the child Jesus, and prayed to the Lord that he as the Lord’s servant might now be dismissed for he had seen the salvation that had been promised. Simeon also foretold the destiny of Jesus and the suffering Mary would undergo.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. On this feast of the Holy Family, we celebrate God’s incarnation into a human family who loved, protected and taught him. They were holy because they were perfect in obedience and virtue; blessed because they feared the Lord and walked in his ways. We, too, may strive to attain this holiness, in our imitation of the Holy Family’s example and through the grace of Christ. Let us pray for all of us, may the Holy Spirit help us grow in faith, hope and love.

When he prays, he is heard;
he stores up riches who reveres his mother.
Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children,
and, when he prays, is heard.

My son, take care of your father when he is old;
grieve him not as long as he lives.
Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him;

The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying:
“Fear not, Abram!
I am your shield;
I will make your reward very great.”
But Abram said,
“O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be,
if I keep on being childless
and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?”

“See, you have given me no offspring,
and so one of my servants will be my heir.”
Then the word of the LORD came to him:
“No, that one shall not be your heir;
your own issue shall be your heir.”
The Lord took Abram outside and said,
“Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can.
Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.”
Abram put his faith in the LORD,
who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.
The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would;
he did for her as he had promised.
Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age,
at the set time that God had stated.
Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his
whom Sarah bore him.

When the days were completed for their purification

They took him up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,

a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,
in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.
This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
that he should not see death
before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus
to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go
in peace, according to your word,
for my eyes have seen your salvation,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;

There was also a prophetess, Anna,
the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.
She was advanced in years,
having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,
and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.
She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.
And coming forward at that very time,
she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child
to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

to their own town of Nazareth.
